Over a point and on level ground

Low Res       High Res

  1. Release the legs and raise the platform of the tripod up to chest height and re-lock the legs.
  1. Open the legs of the tripod in an equilateral triangle, placing the feet about 3 feet apart with the desired point in the center. (On sloped ground put two of the legs downhill, and one of the legs poking into the hill.)

  1. Set the Total Station on the platform and tighten the screw that holds it in place from the bottom.

Low Res       High Res

  1. Turn on the Total Station and use the plummet device (in our case a laser plummet) by pressing the following keys: power, menu, F4, F3, F1.

  1. Step one of the legs into the ground, and then take a hold of the other two legs and reposition them until the laser is directly on the desired point, then step the other two legs into the ground. (For sloped ground step the uphill leg into the ground and adjust the two downhill legs.)

Low Res       High Res

  1. Now as needed release any one of the legs at a time and adjust its length until the bubble of the rough or circle bubble is in the center of the circle.

Low Res       High Res

  1. After loosening the horizontal motion clamp turn the Total Station so that the plate level is parallel with two of the leveling screws. Now adjust the two screws so that the bubble is in the center of the plate.

Low Res       High Res

  1. Now turn the Total Station 90 so that the plate level is perpendicular to the first two screws using the third screw.  Using only that third screw adjust so that the bubble is once again centered.

Low Res       High Res

  1. (Avoid the temptation to over-use the leveling screws.  If you need to turn them more than one full turn you did a sloppy job on step six and you should repeat it.)
  1. Now check your leveling by turning the Total Station to a random angle and check the plate level.  If needed repeat steps 7, and 8.
  1. Once again turn on the laser plummet and check your position again.  If needed loosen the screw holding the Total Station to the platform and slide the Total Station over the point, and re tighten the screw.
  1. Double check your leveling and you’re ready to go!

Overall video on hill

Once you are proficient at this the entire procedure should take less than 5 minutes.
